Increasing Geriatric Expertise in Surgical and Related Medical Specialties

We are delighted to announce that Lois L. Deaton, MD, representing the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Cincinnati has been selected to participate in the Geriatrics Education for Specialty Residents (GESR) Program, a component of the AGS/Hartford Foundation funded project: Increasing Geriatrics Expertise in Surgical and Related Medical Specialties. The participating geriatrician in this grant is Gregg Warshaw, MD.

The GESR initiative supports curricular innovations at individual institutions by providing a two-year to support specialty-specific programs designed to increase education for residents in the geriatric aspect of their disciplines. Other programs selected to participate in this program are in anesthesiology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and University of Miami School of Medicine, in emergency medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and North Shore University Hospital, in general surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, and in a joint general surgery and emergency medicine program at MetroHealth Medical Center, in gynecology at the Yale University School of Medicine, in orthopaedic surgery at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, in otolaryngology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, in physical medicine & rehabilitation at the University of Kentucky, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and in urology at Boston Medical Center and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

The Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation was selected for this program because of the commitment demonstrated in Dr. Lois L. DeatonŐs proposal to improve the quality of care for older patients and her institutionŐs support of this objective.

Funded by a multi-year grant from The John A. Hartford Foundation, the American Geriatrics SocietyŐs Geriatrics for Specialists project is under the direction of John R. Burton, MD. This program seeks to improve the health care of older people by working with organizations in the following specialties: anesthesiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, thoracic surgery, and urology. Enclosed please find some information about this project.

The American Geriatrics Society (AGS), the leading clinical society devoted to the care of older adults was founded in 1942. The AGS promotes high quality, comprehensive and accessible care for AmericaŐs older population, including those who are chronically ill and disabled. The organization provides leadership to health care professionals, policy makers and the public by developing, implementing and advocating programs in patient care, research, professional and public education and public policy.

The John A. Hartford Foundation is a private philanthropy established in 1929 by John A. Hartford. Mr. Hartford and his brother, George L. Hartford, both former chief executives of The Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, left the bulk of their estates to the Foundation upon their deaths in the 1950s. Since 1979, the Foundation has focused its support on improving the organization and financing of health care and assisting the health care system to accommodate the nation's aging population.
